Kisumu the quiet port city found on the shores of Lake Victoria, is Kenya’s third largest city having been awarded city status in the year 2001. Its wide streets, fine colonial architecture, an exceptional museum, one of Kenya’s largest open markets and excellent facilities makes it the gateway to western Kenya’s rich tourism circuit.
Located just a kilometer from Kisumu’s central business district is the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary that was created as a safe haven for impalas within Kisumu and its neighborhood. The sanctuary is however more than just a home for impalas as it is a one-stop shop for visitors who wish to view some of the big cats at a close range. It boasts of several lions, cheetahs, baboons, bush duikers, bushbucks, leopards, hyenas and jackals. Bird enthusiasts will also be delighted to know that the sanctuary hosts more than 100 bird species.
To the South of the city, fishing villages line Lake Victoria towards the broad waters of Homa Bay. This area is home to Ruma National Park, a small but attractive park with many unique wildlife species.
The best way to appreciate the beauty of this region is on the lake itself. The sun shines brightly, and gentle breezes rise from the waters.
Key Activities: Kisumu Museum, local fish dishes by the lake, boat rides at sunset, Golf, Kit Mikaye, Jaramogi Odinga Mausoleum, Kisumu Impala Sanctuary and a vibrant nightlife to long for.
One of the best times to visit Kenya is from July to September, during the country’s dry season, which also coincides with the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra. The rainy seasons are also good times to travel, as there are fewer visitors and you can admire the striking emerald vegetation.
