Charmed by the warmth and hospitality of the Irish on a visit to the Emerald Isle, in the last century, the founder of Macushla House (Gaelic for ‘my beloved’) opened the doors to those seeking the natural joys of life. Surrounded by indigenous bushland, in a suburb of Nairobi, birdsong and wind chimes accompanied by flowing water from the swimming pool dragon are part of the daily concert.

Rooms

The house has been converted into a private homestay and offers accommodation in two-bedroom wings, each with two double ensuite bedrooms and a smaller ensuite single room. Macushla’s spacious en-suite rooms cater for a maximum of ten guests. The main rooms are a combination of wood panels, polished wood floors scattered with kilims, large fireplaces, high beamed ceilings, comfy sofas, coffee tables strewn with books and magazines, odd artworks, and each room leads through to the next. French doors lead down to the swimming pool, where brightly colored sunbeds and umbrellas are scattered on the surrounding paving, and a large stained-glass sculpture of a dragon dominates the scene.

Food & Drink

The bar and dining room take on an ambiance of intimacy yet have been host to many a celebratory function and informal business dinner. The food at Macushla will leave you in no doubt that you are in a private home and not a hotel. Meals are prepared with the freshest ingredients, with particular care given to presentation and simple but wholesome cooking. The terrace and swimming pool are regular venues for guests to relax, choose a tasty dish from the daily menu offered throughout the day and evening, or simply a traditional tea with a hint of indulgence – scones, strawberry jam, and cream.
