Kisiwa House

Kisiwa House (meaning "island" in Swahili) is a luxurious boutique heritage hotel located in the heart of historical Stone Town, Zanzibar, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The hotel is superbly situated on a quiet, authentic street in the upmarket Shandrani district, within easy walking distance of famous landmarks, museums, antique shops, and restaurants. It offers understated luxury, tranquility, and gracious Swahili hospitality.

Kisiwa House was constructed in 1840 by Nassor ibn Abdullah Al Barwani, a rich and influential Omani merchant, during the reign of Sultan Said ibn Sultan who made Zanzibar his main residence in 1837. The property was one of the first buildings in Stone Town and has been in the same family for generations. The impressive 170-year-old wooden staircase and brass-studded door date back to its original construction. It was only recently renovated into a luxury boutique hotel while faithfully preserving its historic character.

Rooms

The hotel features 9-11 spacious and luxurious rooms and suites, all named after aromatic flowers found on the island. Rooms blend contemporary design with Zanzibari style, featuring plush interiors with sleek clean lines, lustrous colors, and rich textiles. Amenities include air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and private bathrooms. The elegantly appointed Malkia Junior Suites reflect queen-like sophistication, while the Sulaima Senior Suites are the superior rooms with bigger sitting areas.

The interior design is a fusion of authenticity and opulence, laden with a private collection of antique furniture, brass fixtures, Persian rugs, original photographs, dark woods, and traditional Zanzibari carvings. Rooms are infused with traditional incense, rose water, flowers, and Stone Town spices, creating a sensory escape that evokes the charm of a bygone era. The lush greenery complements the antique furniture cared for by the family for generations.

Kisiwa House features the Darini restaurant, designed to create a warm and relaxed ambiance with fine décor, soft lighting, antique fixtures, and a past of refinement. The hotel has a breezy roof terrace providing a quiet retreat from the bustling streets below. Staff are gracious and welcoming, offering locally-loved recommendations for a true Zanzibari experience with warm smiles. Check-in is from 13:00 and check-out until 11:00 AM
