The reception at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden and Cottages, Ltd. is the Historic Swedo House which was the original hunting lodge/farm house, built between 1906 and 1908. It is located approximately half a mile from the Karen Blixen Museum (Bogani House from the film “Out of Africa”), and is a 30 minute drive from downtown Nairobi.
The luxury hotel cottages were built in 2001, and are adjacent to the Karen Golf and Country Club where guests can enjoy a host of leisure activities, including golf, tennis, and squash. A host of other amenities such as shops, restaurants, and financial services can all be found nearby, within the Karen suburb.
The Coffee Garden sits on 5 acres of land with large hundred-year-old trees, beautiful gardens and pool, and hundreds of different varieties of blooming flowers and a large population of birds. The historic Grogan/MacMillan Manor House is an additional historic feature which was moved brick by brick from downtown Nairobi to the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden in 2008 to save it from demolition. It is now used for special occasions and dining.
Karen Blixen Coffee Garden & Cottages consists of 13 luxury cottages, each with a large fireplace, generous en-suite bathroom, wireless internet access, mini-bar, verandah and satellite TV.There are 9 individual units in total, and an additional 3 “Family Cottages” each with two en-suite bedrooms and a large central sitting room with fireplace and dining and sitting areas.The property also features a “Honeymoon Cottage” with two fireplaces in the bedroom and separate sitting area.
The cottages are set in the garden surrounded by lush trees with a Koi Pond adjacent to an inviting mazeras stone pool, pool bar and restaurant, spa and gym.
To further enjoy your “Out of Africa” experience the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden & Cottages features a small exclusive poolside restaurant (outdoor and indoor seating available) surrounded by trees and lush gardens. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here. This is a perfect place to join friends for our famous Kenya “Sundowners”. Guests may request early breakfasts, take away meals or late check-in dinners. Room service is also available. Our Bedouin style tent restaurant is the perfect setting for quiet intimate dinners and safari introductions.
The bar also has a TV for screening special sporting events. The gym and spa are adjacent to the pool with massages, manicures, pedicures and facials particularly popular among our hotel guests. For additional off-site activities we are near the Karen Golf and Country Club and Race Course Golf Clubs which can be booked by reservation.
Horseback riding can be arranged, and horse-racing at the Ngong Race Course on (most) Sundays is always an exciting way to conclude the weekend. Sight-seeing tours in Karen and Nairobi can be arranged including trips to nearby: Karen Blixen Museum, Giraffe Center, Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Matt Bronze Studios and Kuzuri Beads. There are also numerous shops, restaurants, and leisure activities all within a short drive of the property.
