The first thing that strikes you as you arrive to Fundu Lagoon is that they have a long jetty that runs out from the shore line. The reason for this is that the stretch of shore that the lodge is located on is shelving and, as such, there is a hundred meters or so that is exposed at low tide. Another point worth noting is that this is not a coral sand beach and so is not the white that you find on Zanzibar¡Kbut, with all this being said, for most of the day this is a perfect and totally secluded beach, in comparison with many of the beaches on Zanzibar, this is a huge improvement! For those that are desperate for white sand then the nearby island of Mesali (20 mins by boat) is exactly that, with a perfectly untouched beach tapering off to a coral reef drop off.

The Rooms

The resort comprises 20 bungalows, with a modern-eco feel, specifically designed and hand-crafted to blend with the natural environment of this fertile isle (including 2 Beachside Suites). Fundu Lagoon offers luxury accommodation either directly on the beach or high on the ridge of the peninsula, all with superb sweeping views of the bay.

Room dcor: The 20 bungalows are built on hardwood stilted decks, located discreetly amongst the trees on the beach and in the hillside overlooking the bay, all with their own sense of privacy yet giving full and easy access to the amenities. Furnishings are stylishly simple throughout and made from natural, local materials. Specially designed canvas interiors sit beneath Zanzibari roofing. Coconut wood furniture adorns the individual south-facing balconies Room amenities: Each bungalow has its own hardwood-panelled bathroom with walk-in shower with hot and cold running water. Each room a private balcony combined with mini bar, ceiling fans and full room service each bungalow provides all the comforts and space youll need.

Food & Drink

A short walk from your bungalow takes you to the atmospheric Restaurant and Bar sitting beneath a magnificent sweeping Makuti roof. A number of different levels give ample opportunity to dine alone or as a group, inside or out. The priority is to provide high-quality dishes reflecting the local area and its produce - the emphasis, of course, is on locally caught seafood whilst more carnivorous or vegetarian tastes are catered for with the same degree of care.

The Restaurant Bar has a small, quiet lounge area ideal for an aperitif or after dinner coffee and liqueurs. Another short stroll through reception to the jetty takes you to the larger Jetty Bar which forms a stunning setting for occasional traditional Swahili barbecues and gives party people a chance to stay up and have a good time until the early hours.

For those looking for total seclusion, a really high level of service and something a bit out of the ordinary for their beach break, then look no further! Set on the secluded island of Pemba, to the north of Zanzibar, Fundu Lagoon really is an undiscovered gem. With a wide variety of room types, there are countless options possible and, for the divers, there are some of the best reefs on the east African coast to explore.

There are quite a few different room types to choose from in Fundu Lagoon. Our preference is for the standard beach front rooms, the beach suites or the superior suites. All of the rooms are well proportioned with a good space for the bathroom and bedroom and then a large decking area to the front with sun loungers and table and chairs. As far as facilities go, Fundu has also realized that there is a bit of distance to walk for a beer in the evening and so kindly put in a fridge with a selection of the favourites!
