Babu's Camp is an intimate, semi-permanent tented camp and the only permanent accommodation facility in Mkomazi National Park, one of Tanzania's newest national parks (newly gazetted, covering 3,700 sq.km.). The camp lies entirely within Mkomazi National Park, which shares its northern border with Tsavo National Park in Kenya, making it the first transfrontier national park in East Africa.
Rooms
The camp features 6 walk-in safari tents (some sources mention 5) that are beautifully set among baobab trees and acacia trees, measuring 10 meters by 4.5 meters. Each tent is comfortably furnished classic safari-style with a large hand-carved wooden bed (or twin beds), wardrobe, changing area, safari chairs, writing desk, and soft earth-toned interiors reflecting the land with natural fabrics, stone, wood, and grass, creating a peaceful, harmonious existence with nature. All tents are large, canvas safari tents with en-suite facilities including flush toilet and hot shower.
Facilities
The large bar/mess area is beautifully situated on an outcrop with spectacular views of the Dindira valley and on clear mornings all the way to Mount Kilimanjaro. There's a comfortable lounge area in the bar with the dining area as a separate entity. The dining tent offers ample seating inside and outside on its verandah where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served, with full service bar set up next to a gigantic baobab each night. Below the mess area is an evening sundowner spot that doubles as a fire pit. Electricity is provided by a silenced generator (220V from 07:00-09:00 and 18:30-23:00 daily) providing lighting throughout camp and tents. The camp has WIFI access and cell service available in most spots with some providers offering data.
Wildlife & Activities
Mkomazi National Park is home to 78 species of mammals including elephant, kudu, hartebeest, giraffe, aardwolf, and is particularly notable for endangered Black Rhinos and African Wild Dogs preserved in sanctuaries. The park has approximately 450 recorded bird species, making it a birdwatcher's paradise, sometimes called the last frontier of northern Tanzania with wide variety of flora and fauna. Activities include game drives, hikes/walks in the park accompanied by a ranger, and visits to the Black Rhino and African Wild Dog sanctuaries introduced with aid of George Adamson/Tony Fitzjohn African Wildlife Preservation Trust. Wildlife drives and walks can include trips to a nearby rock pool and stream.
