El Karama Lodge

El Karama Lodge

El Karama Lodge is an intimate, owner‑run eco‑safari lodge on a 14–15,000‑acre private wildlife conservancy in Laikipia, focused on family safaris, low‑impact tourism, and a very personal, homely atmosphere. It is one of the most characterful “hidden gem” properties in the region, especially for families and small groups.

Location & Setting

The lodge sits in the central highlands of Laikipia on El Karama Wildlife Conservancy, overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River and a natural salt lick that attracts wildlife right in front of the lodge. Guests have access to about 15,000 acres of dams, riverine forest, escarpments, acacia woodland, and savannah. The wider ecosystem connects into roughly 200,000 acres of the greater Ewaso landscape, making game viewing varied and rewarding.

Accommodation & Style

El Karama is owner‑built and operated by Murray and Sophie Grant, giving it a soulful, handmade feel with plenty of art and sculptural touches. Accommodation is split into several options: the main lodge cottages (bandas), Nilotica Private House, River Cottages, and the Hobbit House, each with different layouts and levels of privacy. The style is rustic‑chic and earthy, using stone, wood, thatch, and canvas to blend into the environment.

Rooms & Comfort

The lodge has around eight main cottages and related units, sleeping roughly 18 guests across the property. Cottages are individually designed and mostly en‑suite, with baths made from black river stone, locally crafted woodwork, and solar‑powered hot water, plus flushing toilets and proper showers. Soft furnishings are homemade or locally sourced, and small touches like fresh flowers and family artwork reinforce the homely feel.

Facilities & Dining

El Karama is fully solar‑powered for both electricity and water heating, and its operations are accredited as environmentally sustainable. Facilities include a chlorine‑ and salt‑free swimming pool in the heart of the lodge, a games area (ping pong, yoga mats, boules), and comfortable central spaces for dining and relaxing. Meals are home‑style, using produce from the farm and garden, and are tailored for families and longer stays.

Experience & Activities

Activities are a major strength: guided game drives (day and night), bush walks, rock‑hide sleep‑outs, bush breakfasts and dinners, horse riding, fly camping, fishing, ranger walks, and farm/garden visits. There is also a “Bush School for Kids,” with tailor‑made educational adventures for children, plus optional day trips for rhino experiences, helicopter safaris, and flights into Northern Kenya. This makes the lodge particularly good for active, curious guests and young families.

Atmosphere & Service

The atmosphere is warm, creative, and very personal, with the owners and Kenyan team giving the lodge a strong sense of identity. It is described as down‑to‑earth, authentic, and a place to connect with nature rather than a polished resort. Guests contribute conservation fees that directly support the wildlife conservancy, so the stay has a clear purpose beyond comfort alone.

Ideal For

El Karama Lodge is ideal for families, small groups, and travelers who value sustainability, creativity, and a hands‑on wilderness experience. It is especially appealing to guests who want an off‑the‑beaten‑path Laikipia stay with rich activities, child‑friendly programming, and genuine community‑based conservation. For a soulful, eco‑focused lodge in Laikipia, it is an outstanding choice.
