Katavi Wildlife Camp is an intimate retreat nestled on the edge of the Katisunga Plain in Katavi National Park, western Tanzania's third-largest and least visited parks. The camp is positioned set back amongst the trees fringing the Kitasunga Plain, between the verdant Miombo woodlands and golden grasslands, near the edge of the Katuma River.
Rooms
The camp is a small, exclusive lodge of just 8 tents ensuring a very personalized and extremely exclusive experience. It features 6 large Meru-style luxury tents elevated on wooden platforms with thatched roofs, overlooking the plain, plus 2 additional suites (including a honeymoon suite and two family suites) comprising 2 tents with luxury ensuite bathrooms on a shared wooden platform with private plunge pool. All tents are comfortable, roomy, welcoming, mosquito-proof, built on raised decking with low wooden balustrades, and sheltered from midday sun by traditionally thatched roofs.
Views & Wildlife
The camp enjoys one of the best views in the park with breathtaking views of the Katuma River and surrounding landscape. From your vantage point on your tent's veranda or the upper viewing lounge, you can watch predators and plains game during the day and anticipate predators hunting as game move back to trees in evenings. The camp is unfenced, so animals roam freely in its vicinity, and plenty of game can be seen from the camp. At least once a year, guests watch a lion kill from their veranda or bar lounge as there's a resident pride of lions close by and the bar lounge has perfect views across the plain where many lion kills are witnessed.
Facilities & Dining
The camp has a restaurant and bar, with meals taken in the main dining room offering à la carte menu for breakfast and dinner and buffet for lunch. There's a well-stocked bar and open lounge for relaxation, plus a double-storey open-air lounge and dining area. Guests can enjoy a snack and drink at the campfire and delicious meals in the knusse (cozy) restaurant, completing the bush experience.
Activities
The camp offers game drives in open-sided, adapted 4WD vehicles with tiered seating and roof shading for enjoying closeness to nature, plus walking safaris with an armed ranger and fly-camping. Soft drinks are provided on game drives. Because the area has more lions than people (Katavi is one of the few remaining wild parks in Africa where you'll meet more lions than people), and visitor numbers are under 200 per year, guests have an uncrowded and spectacular African safari experience.
Features
The tents are ideally camouflaged among the trees so wild animals don't become aware of guests' presence. The location offers sensational views and the camp blends seamlessly into its beautiful environment. Even when not out on safari game drives, there are often animals to see outside your tent, making your veranda a perfect spot for wildlife viewing. The small camp size ensures personal attention, and you hardly need to leave the camp due to the prime game viewing location.
