Patterson's Camp

Patterson's Camp

Patterson’s Safari Camp is a historic, mid‑range tented camp in Tsavo East National Park, set on the banks of the Athi/Galana River and closely linked to the story of the Tsavo “man‑eater” lions. It’s best for guests who want a simple, nostalgic bush camp with strong river scenery and good access to game drives.

Location & Setting

The camp is tucked away along the Athi River in Tsavo East, far from towns and main roads, creating a quiet, wild atmosphere with river views from most areas of camp. It stands near the area where Colonel J.H. Patterson hunted the famous man‑eating lions during construction of the railway bridge in the late 1890s, which gives the camp its name and historical flavour.

Accommodation & Style

Patterson’s Safari Camp has about 20 canvas tents on raised platforms, all with verandas looking toward the river. There are a handful of “luxury” tents and a larger number of family tents, designed to host couples or groups (some family units can sleep up to 6–8 guests). The style is classic safari: canvas, thatch, and natural materials, with an intentionally rustic feel rather than modern boutique design.

Rooms & Comfort

All tents are en‑suite, with hot running water, flush toilets, and simple but comfortable beds, configured as doubles or twins depending on guest needs. Each tent includes a small porch/veranda with chairs and a table so guests can sit out and watch the river and bush. Comfort level is solidly mid‑range—adequate for multi‑night stays, but not luxury lodge standard.

Facilities & Dining

Meals are usually served in a central open‑air dining area or as bush dinners and informal lunches under trees along the riverbank. The kitchen leans on fresh local produce, with meat from nearby farms and seafood brought in from the Indian Ocean or Lake Victoria. There is a bar and lounge area and campfire space, but facilities remain intentionally low‑key to keep the camp feeling like a traditional bush retreat.

Experience & Activities

Guests use the camp as a base for twice‑daily game drives into Tsavo East, visiting open savannas, riverine areas, and viewpoints while looking for elephants, lions, buffalo, and other big game. Because the camp is in one of Tsavo’s less‑developed sectors, drives often feel quiet and “old‑school,” with more wilderness than traffic. Within the camp grounds, walking is allowed only when accompanied by Maasai askaris (guards), because wildlife can move through freely.

Atmosphere & Service

The atmosphere is described as peaceful, “a night in the savannah,” and “beautiful, right on the river,” with a strong sense of history and remoteness. Staff and guides are noted for friendliness and authenticity, helping guests feel safe in a wild setting and sharing the story of Colonel Patterson and the man‑eaters.

Ideal For

Patterson’s Safari Camp is ideal for history‑minded safari travelers, families, and small groups who want a traditional tented camp, river scenery, and a quiet Tsavo East base rather than polished luxury. It suits guests who appreciate old‑Kenya atmosphere, storytelling around the man‑eaters, and extended bush stays in one of Kenya’s largest, least crowded parks.
