Vuma Hills Tented Camp is a comfortable, mid-range permanent camp nestled in the luscious forests of the Vuma Mountains, perched on a hillside overlooking the Mkata Plains of Mikumi National Park in southwest Tanzania. The camp is about 300 km (4-hour drive) from Dar es Salaam, located approximately 15 minutes from Mikumi National Park entrance, and sits perched above the trees stretching over the seemingly endless wilderness on the park's southwest. "Vuma" in Swahili means "good chatter carried by the wind," and the camp offers a cool retreat from the heat of a day's game drive in the forests that overlook the hotter plains below.
Rooms
The camp features 16 spacious and comfortable Meru-style tent chalets (also described as large, comfortable guest tents) standing atop wooden platforms/decks beneath makuti-thatched roofs. Each tent is elegantly furnished with old-fashioned colonial décor, featuring two beds (one single and one double), making them suitable for families with children. Tents are mosquito-proof with en-suite bathroom facilities at the back (shower, basin, toilet, and brick-built bathroom), and each has a shaded wooden veranda at the front to make the most of impressive views. The tents are spread out far enough to ensure a reasonable degree of privacy.
Facilities
The heart of the camp is the main house with restaurant, lounge, and bar built around a small swimming pool with palm-frond salas – a great pool with a view for refreshing after sunrise game drives. The large swimming pool and communal areas offer tall vistas over the Mkata River, and the public areas are convenient for the hotter plains below. The camp features beautiful pool for relaxing after safari, and guests can enjoy the evening at campfire with a cool drink after an exciting safari day. The facilities are generally good and well-maintained.

The camp's unfenced nature allows wildlife to roam freely, and guests can witness the full spectrum of southern Tanzania's incredible biodiversity. Bushbaby calls echo through the night, and the forest setting provides a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. The camp is owned by Foxes Safari Camps and is supplied with fresh products from their own farm in the Tanzanian Highlands, ensuring quality produce. The family Fox runs this lodge, creating a relaxed and comfortable camp atmosphere with great experience.
