Kisampa Bush Retreat

Kisampa Bush Retreat

Kisampa Bush Retreat is a serene, eco-friendly private community conservation sanctuary located in eastern Tanzania, adjacent to the coastal Saadani National Park. Formerly known as Wami River Camp, the retreat lies on a high ridge in a wild, pristine area overlooking the Wami River and floodplains, just outside Saadani National Park. The area features ox-bow lakes, riverine forests, open grassland, wild rolling hills, and steep ridges providing breathtaking views.

Rooms

The retreat features six thatched bungalows (ecologically responsible open bungalows) and can host up to 14 guests. Each en-suite bungalow, banda, or tent includes comfortable beds with mosquito net, a separate eco-bathroom/natural bathroom with toilet set into the surrounding bush, and fantastic views. The bush shower bucket hangs from a tree with hot water delivered for bathing at your request. There are no flushing toilets (composting toilets used) to limit water use, and the retreat offers plenty of space for lying in hammocks or sitting at small work desks. The lodge is comfortably rustic in its simplicity, maintaining a minimal human footprint in this pristine area.

Activities

Activities include game drives, boat safaris, and hiking safaris in Saadani National Park, 3-day hikes sleeping beneath the stars around Kisampa, bird and butterfly watching, hiking in the bush, trips with local cattle herders, and opportunities to learn skills in the village or herd cows. You can also sleep underneath a tree, chill out, and share skills or experiences in the village. The choice of activity depends on what you want to do, the season, and weather conditions.

Conservation & Community

Kisampa is a fusion of conservation and community, run by the Barbour Family who made conservation a life priority. The conservancy is 100% leased from Matipwili Village and engages local communities in employment and managing natural resources sustainably. Since starting in 2003, Matipwili villagers have supported Kisampa and developed skills in hospitality, wildlife management, and anti-poaching activities. The partnership aims to conserve the pristine environment on Saadani's southwestern borders for future generations while providing meaningful rewards to the community today.

Ideal For

Kisampa is ideal for children and families, offering personal attention, exquisite service, and attention to the smallest details. The retreat is perfect for those seeking rustic eco-friendly accommodation, volunteers visiting to help the conservancy, and travelers wanting to experience untamed wildlife areas bordering Saadani National Park. It's a small family company proud of helping surrounding villages, offering a unique way of life blending conservation with community engagement.
