Kisima Ngeda Camp

Kisima Ngeda Camp

Kisima Ngeda Camp is a serene, cozy camp overlooking the seasonal salt-water Lake Eyasi in Tanzania, nestled in a thick stand of doum palm and fever tree forest. Located at the base of the Ngorongoro highlands, the camp rests on the shores of this seasonal soda lake and is fronted by a natural spring lagoon that attracts a steady stream of birdlife. The word "kisima" in Kiswahili means "spring," and it's the spring that makes this place an oasis.

Rooms

The camp features eight palm-thatched canvas tents built on wooden decks that blend into the forest. Each tent has a spacious furnished veranda leading to the bedroom, featuring a king-sized bed and a single bed, plus a comfy armchair. The en-suite bathroom behind the living area includes a walk-in shower and separate loo, with staff heating water for showers. The decor pays tribute to indigenous people with features like animal-hide lampshades and handcrafted metal-framed mirrors. Electricity is generated and lasts through the night.

General facilities

The main area is built with beautiful wooden floors and palm-thatch roofs, consisting of an open-sided lounge with cushioned, bench-seated nooks and an adjoining dining room separated by the bar. Meals are served in the dining room with an expansive view of the lake. The cuisine is delicious and wholesome, combining organic and seasonal produce from local producers with only essentials imported. All meals are freshly prepared and homemade, including bread and ice cream, prepared using local ingredients and produce from the camp's own cows.

In front of the main area, a large grassy clearing opens to a fire pit shaded by fever trees, with a boardwalk leading to the water's edge. The coolest place in camp is the sparkling pool. The word "Kisima Ngeda" means "spring of the claws," referring to the monkey. Guests can enjoy a sun downer on the high platform or on top of the rocky outcrop behind the camp for the best views over the lake and the expansive Alipi escarpment.
