Migunga Tented Camp

Migunga Tented Camp

Migunga Tented Camp is a tranquil, intimate tented camp nestled in a quiet corner on the northwest of Lake Manyara, set within a private 35-acre (14-hectare) acacia forest concession. The camp is ideally situated in the shade of an acacia forest close to the lake shore, only 5 minutes drive from Lake Manyara National Park entrance (northwest entrance) and 10 minutes from the park, making it the ideal base camp to explore Lake Manyara National Park and the colorful town of Mto Wa Mbu.

Rooms

The camp consists of 21 permanent semi-luxury tents (some sources mention 19 original tents plus 11 upgraded suites), all built on raised platforms/elevated wooden platforms under thatch and canvas, discreetly placed around a central glade offering shade and privacy. Despite being spread out for privacy, tents are only a short walk to the restaurant and bar. Each tent features a delightful private veranda with safari chairs for stretching out, large attractive wooden bed frames with comfortable linens, mosquito netting, and en-suite bathrooms with indoor shower and toilet behind canvas screening, creating a perfectly pretty, forest-immersed sleeping experience.

Facilities

The main lodge is a wood and thatch open-sided building housing a restaurant, bar, and reading area. Recently renovated, the central thatch-roofed dining and lounge area has a delightfully homely atmosphere with an indoor fireplace at its heart, comfortable rattan seating, wooden dining furniture, traditional artifacts, and plenty of books for travel inspiration. A communal fire pit with safari chairs is fantastic for cooler evenings under the yellow acacia canopy. The restaurant offers a daily changing 4-course menu with full & half board rates and lunch boxes available. The camp features a lush green garden all year round, English breakfast, terrace, and bar service.

Experience

Guest wake up in the morning to the sound of the forest with beams of sun finding their way through tall trees, creating a magical forest-glade experience. In the afternoon, you can watch vervet monkeys mucking about on the central field (the camp has resident vervet monkeys and other wildlife). Evenings resonate with typical forest creature sounds, making the fairytale setup complete. The campsite is set underneath the canopy of acacia trees close to the lake shore, offering a natural setting with scenic garden views and a welcoming, tranquil forest environment.

Activities

Migunga offers unique activities beyond vehicle-based safaris due to its private camp nature: guided mountain biking with bike hire available and a bike trail to the lake departing from camp, biking or walking safari with sundowners at Lake Manyara, guided bird walks (early morning), forest walks, and village tours with guide through Mto Wa Mbu. The camp is perfectly located to explore Lake Manyara National Park, which boasts more than 400 bird species attracted to the soda lake, and is famous for tree-climbing lions.
