Tindiga Tented Camp

Tindiga Tented Camp

Tindiga Tented Camp is a beautiful, small, and intimate traditional camp ideally situated in northern Tanzania near the tranquil Lake Eyasi, just 1.5-2 kilometers from the stunning seasonal salt-water lake. The camp is nestled on a hill overlooking the shrubland of the Eyasi Ecosystem, with Mount Masumbuku visible in the west and the hills of the Ngorongoro area in the north, offering magnificent views and the ultimate "Africa experience." It's about four hours drive from Arusha and two hours to Ngorongoro Crater and Karatu.

Rooms

The camp features 10 spacious cream-colored canvas tents (some sources mention 8 tented chalets), each raised on a wooden platform and equipped with en-suite bathrooms containing flushing toilets and hot bucket showers. All tents have private verandas, big roll-up windows offering gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape, sturdy wooden beds draped with mosquito nets, locally-made beds, and plant- or animal-themed linen. The tents are thatch-sheltered and blend beautifully with the natural environment using an eco-friendly approach that protects and preserves natural resources.

General facilities

The communal area includes a small intimate thatched dining room with a bar/lounge and a traditional fireside boma where most evenings are spent sharing stories. The camp has a small plunge pool for guests to relax. The restaurant was built by Datoga women, reflecting their culture and lifestyle, and serves delicious traditional dishes with an authentic cultural touch. Hurricane lamps light the path between the communal area and the 10 tents, creating a fairytale walkway atmosphere.

Activities

Tindiga offers unique cultural experiences as the only place in Africa where you can go hunting with the Hadzabe tribe (also spelled Hadza), the last known people living by hunting and gathering honey and fruit. Activities include guided visits to both the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers and Datoga pastoralist tribes, bird watching, nature walks around the lake, and improving bow-and-arrow skills. The camp provides convenient access to unique Tindiga tour activities including cultural experiences during northern Tanzania tours.

About

The camp is run with an eco-friendly approach, protecting and preserving natural resources. With only 10 tents, the camp is small and offers personalized service and quality. Lake Eyasi is a seasonal salt-water lake that almost completely dries up in the dry season, and while wildlife presence is lesser than other Tanzanian lakes, it offers unique cultural experiences you'd miss visiting Lake Manyara instead. The camp is modest but comfortable, offering a peaceful retreat off the beaten path where everything feels personal and homey.
