After completing the necessary registration formalities at Marangu National

Park gate, we transfer you by a Land Cruiser to Rongai. The climb begins from the attractive wooden village of Nale Moru (1,950 m.) on a small path that wind through fields of maize and potatoes before entering pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently, but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife, including the beautiful Kilimanjaro Colobus monkey. These monkeys are black with a long 'cape' of white hair and a flowing white tail. The forest begins to thin out and the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone (2,600 m.) with extensive views over the Kenyan plains.

Dinner and Overnight - Rongai Campsite.

The morning walk is a steady ascent up to the 'Second Cave' (3,450 m.) with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern icefields on the crater rim. We then leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi.

We then take a short but steep climb up grassy slopes and we are rewarded by superb all round views and a tangible sense of wilderness. We leave vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn (4,330 m.), spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The remaining part of the afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization. [8-10 hours walking]

Dinner and Overnight - Cave 4 Campsite

We cross the lunar desert of the 'Saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach School campsite (4,750 m.) at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night!

[4-5 hours walking] Dinner and Overnight - Kibo Campsite

We will start the final, and by far the steepest and most demanding, part of the climb by torch light around 1 a.m. We plod very slowly in the darkness on a switch bank trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gillman's Point (5 685 m.) We will rest there for a short time enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three hour round trip to Uhuru Peak ( 5,896 m) passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Kibo ( 4,700 m) is surprisingly fast and after some refreshment, we continue the descent to reach our final campsite at Horombo (3,720 m).

A steady descent takes us down through moorland to Mandara Hut (2,700m.), the first stopping place at the Marangu route. We then continue descending through lovely lush forest on a good path to the National Park gate at Marangu (1,830 m.).

To Kampala (6 hrs).

Depart Nairobi on the scheduled morning or afternoon flight to the Masai Mara. Touch down in this magnificent wilderness, and your guide will be there to greet you before setting out across the plains where you will have your first wildlife sighting en route to the camp. After lunch. Relax and absorb the surroundings before setting off on an afternoon game drive in the conservancy till sunset. Return to camp at dusk for hot showers, then an aperitif by the fireside with your hosts before settling down for dinner—overnight Kicheche Valley.

An early start to the day with piping hot coffee or tea brought to your tent. Your guide will take you on a morning game drive to explore the savannah and see what nature has to offer. This afternoon take another evening game drive before getting back to camp for dinner. Night game drives are also available and can be taken before or after dinner.

Overnight Kicheche Valley.

Take an early breakfast before checking out of camp and commencing your guided walk. Their route heads west from Kicheche Valley and will take 4 to 5 hours before arriving at the fly camp in Naboisho Conservancy adjacent to a stream. There we enjoy a delectable bush lunch and have some recovery time in the shade. In the afternoon, we will explore the beautiful surrounding area on foot. There is also an opportunity to visit a Masai boma outside the conservancy and to witness cattle being brought back from the plains to their barricaded home for the night. Back to the fly camp for dinner and overnight.

You are awoken at dawn with a hot drink before continuing the journey on foot in the cool morning. Your guide will continue to uncover points of interest on the journey along the escarpment and Seketa Valley of Olare Motorogi Conservancy to reach Bush Camp just before lunch. You will then take an afternoon game drive in the conservancy.

Overnight Kicheche Bush Camp.

Rise early with tea or coffee brought to your tent. Enjoy a morning game drive in the Conservancy. You will see differing terrain along with plenty of animal and bird species. Your afternoon game drive will be followed by sundowner drinks overlooking the plains before returning to camp at dusk.

After breakfast in camp, transfer to the airstrip for your flight to Nairobi.

Walking

The walking will not be strenuous, and there will be many intervals at various points of interest. The distance covered daily will be approximately 10km, taking around 6 hours.

The Camps

KICHECHE VALLEY Our newest and most luxurious camp is nestled in a secluded valley with a host of resident wildlife on your doorstep. The Naibosho Conservancy is flourishing with a fantastic array of wildlife on offer and opens up a whole new area of the Mara to explore while game driving or walking.

KICHECHE BUSH CAMP is located in a prime wildlife area in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, the camp is unfenced, and the animals are free to roam through camp. It's in a great place to see the wildebeest migration, and the camp itself gives you a real feeling of being in the wilderness. Yet, it is very comfortable, with professional and genuinely friendly service.

FLY-CAMP A lightweight fly-camp, staffed by a cook and a camp hand, with small dome tents for two people equipped with camp beds, bedrolls, chairs, and a washstand. Basic bathroom facilities are available (long drop toilet and bush shower). A lightweight mess shelter will be used in the event of rain. The fly camp is set up on an exclusive basis and can cater to a maximum of 6 people. The itinerary works as well with Kicheche Bush Camp first.

What to take

We advise that you wear sturdy walking shoes or boots. Water, sun cream, and a hat are other essential items and don't forget your binoculars. If you like, you can carry with you a small, light backpack.

Pick up from your Nairobi Hotel at 0830hrs and depart for the Rift Valley with a brief stopover at the viewpoint for photos of the valley with Mount Longonot background. Proceed to Lake Nakuru National Park for lunch at the lodge or Camp. Late afternoon game viewing & bird watching drive.

After breakfast, leaves Lake Nakuru and head to Lake Naivasha, this is also a freshwater lake inhabited by birds and other game; the whole day spends in Naivasha dinner. Optional activities are available at the lake or day at leisure.

Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain proudly standing at 19,344ft, and sometimes known as the “ROOF OF AFRICA.”After lunch, game drive until sunset in the expansive Amboseli plains, which are home to herds of elephants that feed on the large acacia trees. After breakfast, check out and drive towards Tsavo west national park. You will be arriving on time for lunch later in the afternoon on a game drive; Tsavo West is known for its beautiful, rugged wilderness. The savannah ecosystem comprises open grasslands, scrublands, and Acacia woodlands, belts of riverine vegetation, and rocky ridges, including the Poacher's Lookout, where visitors can see the teeming herds in the plains below. Tsavo West offers some of the most magnificent game viewing in the world, and attractions include elephant, rhino, Hippos, lions, cheetah, leopards, Buffalos, diverse plant and bird species, including the threatened corncrake and near threatened Basra Reed Warbler. This day is your arrival day in Africa and you are welcome at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Nairobi, Kenya by our representative then driven to your Nairobi Hotel where you will stay the first night. Overnight is at Safari Park Hotel on Bed and breakfast.

First day of your wildlife safari in Kenya starts with a drive northwards through the Kikuyu farmlands and via Nyeri town on the slopes of Mount Kenya arriving at around noon at the Murera Lodge around the Meru National Park. Here you will have lunch then after a short rest you will visit the George Adamson’s Old Base Camp. Overnight Is at Elsa’s Kopje Lodge. All meals included.

Middle-class accommodation is also possible at Murera Springs at a cheaper price.

This day will be spent doing game drives in this wonderful undiscovered wildlife park of Kenya off the Classical touristic areas. This is where you have the whole wilderness for the two of you and just a few people who are discoverers like you. It is the beauty of this place that lured the early conservationists Joy and George Adamson into spending most of their lives in Kenya in this wonderland. The Rhino Sanctuary raises your chances of spotting the big Five during on your Honeymoon Safari in Kenya. Apart from game drives you will have the options of visiting the local farms bird watching and of course the Sundowners for two! Overnight is at Elsa’s Kopje Lodge. All meals included.

Morning breakfast and then start on our way further north to the equator where you will make a brief stop then enter the Ol Pejeta Conservancy for lunch at Sweetwaters Tented Camp. After lunch and some rest you will head to the wilderness for an afternoon game drive until late in the afternoon when we check in back at the lodge for Dinner and overnight. Overnight at The Sweetwaters Tented Camp. All meals included.

At a supplement you can stay at a fabulous Ol Pejeta House or Ol Pejeta Bush Camp.

On this morning after breakfast you will head to the Chimpanzee center to see the apes and a visit to the Museum. We will then go ahead with the game drives all day with a break for lunch and some rest at the lodge/camp. Dinner and overnight is at Sweetwaters Tented Camp. All meals included.

After breakfast at Sweetwaters on this day we head on the same way back southwards to the Nyeri town where we will have a sumptuous dinner at the Outspan Hotel. After lunch you will be picked by the 4×4 vehicle provided by the Treetops Lodge and head for the afternoon game drive in the Aberdares National Park with the lodge safari guide. Dinner and overnight will be at the Tree House style lodge Treetops Hotel. All meals included.

After breakfast we check out of the Aberdares and head to Lake Nakuru National Park with a brief stop at the Thomson Falls at Nyahururu. We arrive in perfect time for lunch at Lion’s Hill Lodge then go for game drives in the wilderness in search of the White rhinos, Rothschild giraffes and many more animal species found in this park. We will also visit the lake shores for an eyes feast of the soaring colorful lesser and greater flamingos among other aquatic and non aquatic birds. Dinner and overnight at Lion’s Hill Lodge. All meals included.

On this day we take afternoon and drive back to Nairobi for a flight to Ukunda or Mombasa (depending on flight availability). On arrival you will be met by our Safari Desire representative and transferred to The Sands at Nomad beach hotel in Diani beach.

These days will be spent at the beach resorts where you can take some of the water sports available or just soak it up on the white sands of Diani.

Samburu takes its name from the nomadic tribe who live throughout this area. Shaba and Buffalo springs are also Samburu land. The Samburu have long used the Ewaso N'giro as a water source for their herds of goats, sheep, and camels. In dry periods, they dig wells into the dry river bed or take advantage of ready-made wells dug by elephants.

Traditionally the Samburu hold great respect for the wild animals with whom they share this area.

Kikuyu mythology believes all of creation began at the summit of Mount Kenya. The mountain his resting place, and it was from here that he called forth Gikuyu, the father of the Kikuyu people. The Kikuyu culture has always remained bound by strict and robust ties of clan loyalty and an even stronger sense of tribal unity - still devoted to the original Nyumba ya Mumbi. The Kikuyu were widely affected by the coming of European settlers. The British found the highlands of Kenya to be ideal for settlement and farming, and the Kikuyu were widely displaced.

Breakfast at the Lodge/Camp; afterward, depart for the Rift Valley, passing via Nyahururu with a brief stopover to catch a glimpse of the Thompson Fall, the highest waterfall in Kenya. Today you commence early for a long trek on a wide track through the forest, with occasional sightings of elephant, bushbuck, buffalo and impala. Emerging from the forest, you walk through heather before crossing the Nithi River to reach the moorlands from where you can enjoy good views of the picturesque Gorges Valley, the Temple, lakes, mushroom rocks, billiards table and the high peaks. Total walking time approx. 8 hours, picnic lunch en route.

Predawn attempt of the summit starts at 0300hrs and you hike for about three hours up to Point Lenana (4985m), the hikers' summit, arriving therein time to watch the African sunrise. Descend to Shipton's camp for breakfast and a whole day's rest.

After breakfast, begin a 5-6 hour descent to Sirimon Park gate (2600m). Tip: Day 2's hike is a long one involving a steady climb up to Mintos. Hikers who are not limited by time can take an overnight stopover at the Nithi Camp (3300m) mid-way to Mintos. From here they can explore the nearby Nithi Falls or climb Mugi hill (3500m) for better acclimatization. Alternatively you can hike directly toMintos/Halltarn and spend an extra day here instead to recuperate and explore the Gorges Valley which also accords you a better acclimatization due to the higher altitude.

Depart from Nairobi at 09:00hrs and proceed North towards the cool slopes of Mt. Kenya. Cross the Equator and arrive at Nanyuki Simba / Lodge in time for Lunch. Drive to the gate then walk to the Meteorological Station. This is a very good day for acclimatization; for we will be sleeping at an altitude of 10,000 ft 9 Kms 3-4 hours walk

Buffet breakfast at the hotel in Cairo then start a guided tour to visit one of the Seven Wonders the great Pyramids of Giza; (Cheops, Chephren and Mycerinus) were reckoned by the Greeks to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World. A single pyramid is built with 2.300.000 blocks, each weighing an average of two and a half tones. In the face of such immensity, one cannot help but feel the wonder and awe that so many writers and artists have sought to convey over the centuries.

The Cheops Pyramid 

is more interesting, because its interior burial chambers are open for inspection by the public. Not far from the Pyramids is the Great Sphinx Great of Giza, which dates from the time of Chephren (2620 BC). Hewn from natural yellowish limestone and standing 65 feet-high and 187 feet-long, this unforgettable statue combines the head of a Pharaoh with a lion's body. The Egyptian Museum was established by the Egyptian government in 1835. The present museum building, designed in the new classical style, was constructed in 1900 by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon. The museum exhibits collections that now exceed 120,000 objects, ranging from the prehistoric era to the Greco-Roman period. It has 107 halls, with the ground floor housing huge statues. The upper floor displays small statues, jewels, Tutankhamun's treasures, and mummies. The museum also comprises a photography section and a large library. A hall for the Royal Mummies was opened at the museum, housing eleven kings and queens.

Lunch will be served at an oriental, Chinese, or Thai restaurant. In the afternoon, you will visit the Citadel, which features the towering Mosque of Muhammad Ali. One of Cairo's most popular tourist attractions, the Citadel houses several museums, ancient mosques, and other sites. Located on a spur of limestone detached from the Moqattam Hills by quarrying, the Citadel is one of the world's greatest monuments to medieval warfare. It also serves as a highly visible landmark on Cairo's eastern skyline. Particularly when viewed from the back side (from the north), the Citadel reveals a very medieval character.

The area where the Citadel is located began its life not as a great military base, but as the "Dome of the Wind," a pavilion created in 810 by Hatim Ibn Hartama, who was then governor. This area was known for its cool breeze, and the early governors used the pavilion for its view of Cairo. Between 1176 and 1183, Salah ad-Din (Saladin) fortified the area to protect it from Crusader attacks. Since then, the Citadel has always had a military garrison and has served as both a fortress and a royal city.

After visiting the Citadel, a short drive will take you to the Khan El Khalili bazaars, one of the most famous bazaars worldwide, known for its narrow alleyways. Visitors can discover small restaurants and workaday cafes where Egyptians and non-Egyptians gather to smoke water pipes and enjoy traditional Egyptian drinks. A few years ago, Naguib Mahfouz himself would come to sit beneath the huge, aging mirrors of a café in this area. The bazaars are a favorite stop for tourists, offering a fun experience with bargaining for souvenirs. You can find jewelers, items made from copper, parquetry boxes, semi-precious stones, rugs, blown-glass dishes, and more.

Arusha National Park – over 400 bird species including water birds in Momella Lakes. After breakfast meet Field Crew in the morning at 8:00am. First stop is Arusha Town for any last-minute purchases before you head off on safari. Here you will participate in a half day walking safari and a half day game drive.

The Arusha National Park and particularly the Momella Lakes offer gorgeous bird-watching opportunities. The national park is inhabited by over 400 different migrant and resident bird species. There will be much to see and hear during our time here. Stopping in the lush forest that grows along the edge of the ancient volcanic crater, we’ll look for the massive African Crowned Eagle, as well as Mountain Buzzard, African Green Pigeon, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Bar-tailed Trogon, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Moustached Green Tinkerbird, African Palm, Horus, Alpine, Mottled, Little, and Nyanza Swifts, Black Saw-wing, Olive Mountain (Placid), Stripe-faced, and Mountain Greenbuls, Waller’s, Kenrick’s, and with luck Abbott’s Starlings, and Eastern Double-collared Sunbird.

We’ll encounter a different set of birds in the more open areas of scrub and grassland, where Rufous-naped Lark, Pangani Longclaw, White-browed Scrub Robin, African Moustached and Cinnamon Bracken Warblers, Trilling and Siffling Cisticolas, and the very local Taveta Golden Weaver will all vie for our attention. The ancient volcanic craters have created wetlands that will be alive with Lesser Flamingos, and this is a reliable site for the normally elusive Greater Painted-snipe.

Into the Arusha National Park, where we’ll find ourselves among Masai Giraffe, Common Waterbuck, Bushbuck, Warthog, Guereza Colobus, Blue Monkey, and Olive Baboon. Hiding in the dappled shade of this magnificent evergreen hill forest we may also find a tiny woodland antelope, the secretive Suni, along with the bay-colored Harvey’s Red Duiker. If we are very lucky we may also catch sight of a Leopard or Serval.

Tarangire National Park – Over 550 bird species

After tasty breakfast the tour will depart to Tarangire.The drier areas of the park are occupied by the Stocking-thighed Ostrich, the world’s largest bird, the Kori Bustard, the heaviest flying bird in the world, and smaller groups of hornbills... The Tarangire National Park with its various habitats and food sources is a park every bird-watcher most sees. In the Tarangire National Park you can also see the three endangered bird species of Tanzania: Rufous-tailed weaver, Ashy starling and Yellow-collared Lovebird. The swampy floodplains in Tarangire's southern and eastern part are important breeding grounds for the Eurasian migrants. Tarangire's woodlands are inhabited by Hoopoes, Hornbills, White-bellied Go-away-bird and Brown parrots.

This area is also inhabited by game birds such as Yellow-necked spurfowl, Helmeted Guineafowl and Crested Francolin. Commonly seen birds are also Lilac-breasted rolers, barbet and mousebirds, striped swallows and starlings, swifts, hammerkops, beef eaters, cordon bleus and owl’s plovers.The hills in the Tarangire National Park are the homelands of over 50 raptor species such as the Bateleur eagles, the Steppe Eagles (which migrate from Russia), the giant Lappet-faced Vultures and the tiny Pigmy Falcon.

For the best game viewing Tarangire is well known for its huge elephant population and baobab trees. It forms the center of an annual migratory cycle that includes up to 3000 elephants, 25,000 wildebeest and 30,000 zebras.

Lake Manyara National Park – Over 400 bird species including water birds Lake Manyara National Park has over 400 bird species including water birds Eurasian migrant birds, acacia associated birds, raptors, and 3 endangered Tanzanian species: Rufous-tailed weaver, Ashy starlings and Black-collared Love bird. Lake Manyara National Park and Lake Natron also offer great opportunities of Flamingo watching as they gather on the lake shore in flocks of ten thousand or even several hundred thousand.

Some of the birds you can see in the floodplains of Lake Manyara are Crowned Plover, Grey Crowned Crane, Fischer's Sparrow Lark, Two-banded courser and the Black-faced Sandgrouse.The bush clups on the edge of the floodplain is occupied by groups of Long-tailed fiscal, the rare Pangani Longclaw. The birds in the Lake Manyara forest are: Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, Narina Trogon, Crowned Hornbill, Schalow's Turaco, Emerald Cuckoo, Crowned Eagle and ground dwelling Crested Guineafowl.

Lake Manyara you’ll be able to sport a large number of animal species and incredible bird life. Manyara has the largest concentration of baboons anywhere in the world, also include Buffalo, Elephant Wildebeest, Zebra, Waterbuck, Warthog, Impala and also Manyara health population lion are famous for their tree-climbing antics.

After breakfast, the tour will depart for Serengeti National Park, via the beautiful high lying farmland of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Leaving the highlands behind, you descend into the heart of wild Africa – the Serengeti National Park – with its endless plains, rolling into the distance as far as the eye can see. Then heard to the central park area, known as the Seronera area, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park, featuring the Seronera River, which provides a valuable water source to this area and therefore attracts wildlife well representative of most of the Serengeti’s species. Arrive in time for lunch and enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti national park.

Serengeti National Park – Over 400 bird species

Another full day game drives in Serengeti. After breakfast game viewing drive along the Sogore River Circuit, which loops into the plains south of the Seronera River, and which is good for possible lion, Thomson gazelle, topic, ostrich and cheetah sightings. The visitor’s centre not far from the Serengeti Seronera Lodge and public campsites is well worth a visit after the morning’s game drive. This nicely designed centre, offers some interesting wildlife displays as well as a gift shop selling information leaflets and maps of the area. The centre also has a shop where cold drinks and snacks can be purchased, as well as a picnic area and information trail up and around a nearby kopje.

Enjoy viewing over 500 species of birds including ostriches, secretary birds, different types of vultures and eagles, Egyptian geese, black headed herons, crowned cranes, Kori bustards and many more can also be found in the Serengeti National Park. Dinner and Overnight Great Exploration Camps.

Early in the morning game drive in Serengeti National Park and after depart to Ngorongoro Conservation area where you will have your lunch. You will arrival early afternoon where you will be able to visit one of Maasai Boma (if you are interested) to learn scenic culture from Maasai. After an early breakfast, you will descend over 600 meters into the crater to view wildlife. Supported by a year round water supply and fodder, the Ngorongoro conservation Area supports a vast variety of animals, which include herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and giant African elephants. Another big draw card to this picturesque national park, is it’s dense population of predators, which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the ever-elusive leopard, which sometimes requires a trained eye to spot. The annual migrants from Europe and Asia inhabit the Ngorongoro Crater between September. Among the migrant birds in this area you can see the Lesser Kestrel, the European swallow, European bee eater, the Northern Wheatear, European roller, Pallid Harrier, Caspian Lapwing and the Montagu's Harrier. Furthermore in the wet season you can see the Rosy-breasted Long claw and large flocks of European storks. On the bare grounds or sand tracks in the Ngorongoro Crater you can see nests of Ostiches, Kori bustards, Secretary birds, Grey crowned Cranes, the ground nestling Northern Anteater Chat, Rufous-napped Lark, Capped Whater, Fischer's Sparrow lark, Red capped Lark and the Grassland Pipit. The tree nestling birds of the Ngorongoro Crater are the Superb Starling, Rufous Tailed Weaver and the African White Backed Vulture. The Ngorongoro Crater is also inhabited by birds of prey such as: the Augur buzzard and the Long-crested eagle.

After extensive game drive you'll drive back to Arusha to your hotel/pick up point.

Mto wa Mbu is one of the first cultural tourism sites developed by TTB and SNV. Situated on the foot of the Great Rift Valley bordering Lake Manyara National Park, straddling the famous Arusha / Serengeti route, 120kms and 60kms from Arusha and Ngorongoro respectively, Mto wa Mbu is one of the most popular cultural tour sites in Tanzania.

Following the setting up of irrigation systems in the early 1950s, the area rapidly developed into a small town attracting a new wave of tribes from all over the country, each with its own cultural background. Nowhere else in Tanzania have so many different tribes settled in such a small area.

Choose from a walk through the farms and green oasis on the foot of the Rift Valley; a climb to Balala Hill; a view into the culture of the many tribes living in the area; a trip to Miwaleni Lake and waterfall where there is an abundance of papyrus; visits to development projects that aim to improve agriculture and start income-generating activities for local farmers.

Learn about traditional iron smelting technology, one of the oldest in Africa. The local people will show you how to make different tools like spears, knives, arrows. Learn from the local women how pots and dishes are made from clay soil and baked to make them hard. On the surrounding plains and woodlands to the north, east and south live native Maasai families in their traditional bomas (homesteads) while the warriors wander with their cattle looking for pastures and water.

Tanzania has over 120 tribes each with its own culture. The Maasai in northern Tanzania are among the most popular ethnic groups in the area, a proud people fervently attached to their cultural values. Ngorongoro is the home of the pastoral Maasai, who have been allowed to live in the conservation area, a pioneering experiment in multi-purpose land use where people, their livestock and wildlife coexist and share the same protected habitat. The Maasai move widely with their herds of cattle, sheep, goats and donkeys in search of pasture and water. In recent years the Maasai have been encouraged to work on the land to supplement their traditional staple food of milk and meat.

While in Ngorongoro most of the guests on safari love to include a visit to a Maasai Boma (homestead). The Seneto Maasai Boma on the western slopes of the Ngorongoro Highlands about two hundred metres off the main road to Serengeti is one of the most famous cultural visitor points for guests. Another popular Maasai village is Irkeepus which is located in the Ngorongoro Highlands and a visit can be combined with a trek of Olmoti or Empakaai Crater.

Visitors will be shown around the Maasai Boma, and are welcome to explore the huts where Maasai families live and learn a few things about their way of living. The huts, normally built by women, are made of wood, mud and cow dung.

The visit lasts about 30 to 45 minutes and at the end the villagers will show off and try to sell their colourful beadwork and other handcrafted wares. If time allows the Maasai warriors would challenge men to engage in a spear throwing match or perform a tribal dance, and ladies may choose to participate in beadwork. This is intended to expose visitors to the Maasai culture though briefly and enrich them with some authentic African experiences.

Lake Eyasi is a very scenic soda lake found on the southern border of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a couple of hours drive from Karatu. This less visited lake lies at the base of the Eyasi escarpment on the western Great Rift Valley wall, bordered by the Eyasi Escarpment in the northwest and the Kidero Mountains in the south.

This is a hot, dry land, around which live the Hadzabe people, often associated with the Khoisan languages in Southern Africa because of their click language. The Hadzabe are believed to have lived here for nearly 10,000 years and continue to follow hunting-and-gathering traditions. Also in the area are the Iraqw (Mbulu), a people of Cushitic origin who arrived about 2000 years ago, as well as the Datoga also Cushitic, the Maasai and various Bantu groups including the Nyakyusa, Nyamwezi, Chaga and Meru. The area is Tanzania’s main onion-growing centre, and there are impressive irrigation systems along the Chemchem River drawing its water from natural springs.

The Hadzabe, a hunter-gatherer tribe, live close to the shores of Lake Eyasi, as do the Nilotic-speaking Datoga tribe who are pastoralists. Visits to these tribes are possible on half day or full day excursions which would include a visit to their homesteads, learning about their way of life, medicinal plants, and even animal tracking with bows and arrows with the Hadzabe hunters.

Ngi’iresi Village is located about 07 kilometres from Arusha town on the lower slopes of Mount Meru, the second highest mountain in Tanzania (4566m). The inhabitants of the village are farmers of the Wa-Arusha tribe. The Wa-Arusha are relatives of the Maasai, but have gradually shifted from pastoralism to mixed farming with agriculture being the main activity. There is the opportunity to gain an insight into the culture of the Wa-arusha tribe: listen to age-old stories, visit traditional houses, (optional)  – indulge in a delicious lunch and / or dinner prepared by the Juhudi Women’s Group).

One can take a half day or full day guided tour to this village on the foothills of Mount Meru, visiting some farms and several development projects in the village including soil conservation, irrigation, cross breeding, bio-gas production; coffee and tea can be served at Mzee Loti’s farm. Walk to the nearby “bomas”, to see the various styles of traditional Maasai and Wa-Arusha houses. Climb Lekimana hill, from where you can have a beautiful view of Arusha town and the surrounding Maasai plains, on a clear day Kilimanjaro is visible from here. The tour can include a climb to Kivesi Hill, an old volcano with a natural forest at the summit.

The Kondoa Rock Paintings in Kolo are located about 260 kilometres to the south of Arusha town, a 4-hour drive on the Great North Road, and about 20 kilometres from the Kondoa District centre.

This is a world class historical heritage site of ancient rock art, remarkable not just for their quantity but also quality. Human figures and animals (elephant, eland and giraffe) usually painted in dark red, and a few abstract designs, can be seen on the face of the rocks and caves. According to researchers these are the earlier rock paintings dated 5,000 to 10,000 years and are attributed to hunter-gatherer Bushmen, a click language tribe, who are said to be ancestors of the Sandawe tribe currently inhabiting the western part of Kondoa District. The languages of the Sandawe in Kondoa and the Hadzabe in Lake Eyasi though not ethnically related are connected to the Khosian languages spoken in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa that have click consonants. It is not surprising that similar rock paintings can also be viewed in some parts of southern Africa inhabited by the Bushmen.

More recent paintings whitish in colour can also be seen, dating probably 500 years ago, which are said to have been made by the Bantu speaking Warangi, the predominant agriculturist tribe in Kondoa District.

The site visit was prompted by increasing interest in the ancient rock art from potential visitors to Tanzania and the need to enrich the visitor itinerary in the northern Tanzania safari land. The Kolo Rock Paintings are located along the Maasai Escarpment bordering the Great Rift Valley hardly 160 kilometres from Tarangire National Park. The rock paintings can be visited in a day trip from the park or Maramboi and Lake Burungi areas in Tarangire, leaving in the morning with picnic lunch for a 2 to 3-hour tour of the sites at Kolo and neighbouring Pahi mountains and returning to Tarangire late in the afternoon. For those interested in spending more time to explore the intriguing prehistoric paintings scattered around the area, visitors can be accommodated in Kondoa town where basic but clean guest accommodation is available.

The Kolo Rock Paintings are a protected area and one of Tanzania’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. There are many sites of rock paintings scattered around the Kondoa district, but the paintings at Kolo and Pahi area are the most documented and visited.

Some 75 kilometres to the north of Dar es Salaam lies Bagamoyo, once one of the most important trading centres on the East African Coast and a famous embarkation port for slaves from the hinterland. When the German colonialists came to East Africa they made Bagamoyo their first German East Africa capital between 1886 and 1891.

It is a place of considerable significance to world history, both as an entry point for Arab and European missionaries, explorers, and traders in East and Central Africa, and in the history of the infamous slave trade. Fortunately Bagamoyo is now being considered for inclusion into one of the World Heritage sites, to conserve and protect the fascinating Gothic and Afro-Arabic architecture in this coastal settlement steeped in history. Tourist attractions include among others:
