Beho Beho Camp

Beho Beho Camp

Beho Beho (meaning "cool breeze") was the first permanent camp built in the Selous Game Reserve (now Nyerere National Park, Africa's largest standalone national park at 30,893 sq km), sited in the cooler highlands overlooking the Rufiji River Valley rather than on the banks or flood plains. Located on a forested hillside above the Rufiji River floodplain in what is effectively a private valley, the camp enjoys sweeping views of savanna grasslands and wooded hillsides, with wild nature surrounding and permeating the property.

Rooms

The camp consists of 8-9 spacious, exclusive stone-and-thatch bandas (cottages) built from local stone with palm-leaf thatched roofs, rather than traditional tented accommodation. Spread to either side of the main house (4 on each side), each banda features open-fronted design with canvas curtain drawn across at night, private lounge, large bed, en-suite bathroom with dressing room and open-air shower, and private veranda facing sunrise. The main suite is open in front with canvas curtain, and the bandas catch cooling breezes with elevated positions for ventilation. The camp also includes a Treehouse for intimate night-time wildlife experience, and a Zanzibar daybed available for families/children.

Views & Wildlife

From the lofty perch, the camp offers panoramic views over the Rufiji River flood plains and spectacular views across the plains to the front of the camp, with open-fronted rooms facing the sunrise every morning. The elevated position provides sweeping vistas of the Kipalala Valley and swimming pool has magnificent views. Wildlife roams freely across and through camp with large numbers of plains game and excellent predator representation, and hippo-filled watering holes are nearby. The camp enjoys virtually exclusive access to diverse northern Selous regions where wildlife moves freely.

General facilities

The main lodge is large and airy, furnished in the style of a private house/bush home with comfortable seating, dining areas, and very few walls. Facilities include a snooker/billiards table (original Welsh owner was keen player), bar, lounge, and library with Internet/WIFI access available in all rooms. A beautiful swimming pool is located 80m from the main building with comfortable loungers for relaxation. Meals are served outdoors at the front of the camp or in a separate two-storey banda with waterhole views, with bush dining, picnics, or private dining in the Eagle's Nest available. The emphasis is on elegant hosting and exceptional service.

Activities

Beho Beho offers exceptional wildlife encounters through variety of safari adventures: game drives in open safari vehicles, guided walking safaris (a highlight, with walks to hot springs of Maji Moto), boating excursions on Lake Tagalala, and boating safaris. The camp was the first accommodation in Selous highlands, recognising walking safaris as a key activity. Guests can explore Africa's largest reserve via these diverse activities, enjoying intimate wildlife experiences and the beauty of the African bush from this exclusive location.

About

The camp is described as more of a private home/bush home than a camp – intimate, family-owned, with personal and homely service. It's a very sociable camp like visiting a family home, with warm welcomes and guests very well looked after. Elegantly comfortable accommodation, good food, and great staff are highlights, with terrific guides who are knowledgeable, keen-eyed, and great to be with. The emphasis is on elegance, comfort, and excellent hosting. Minimum stay is three nights as too much change isn't desirable. The camp has fiercely protected its individuality and privileged location as one of the most "magical" places in safari Africa.
