Sable Mountain Lodge

Sable Mountain Lodge is a welcoming, family-owned establishment located on the Northwestern border of Selous Game Reserve (now Nyerere National Park), just outside the Matambwe Gate. Built on two small hills in the Beho Beho hills offering spectacular views from all rooms over surrounding forests, mountains, and the vast reserve. The lodge obtained its name from footprints of Roosevelt Sable Antelopes found during construction in 1999. 

Rooms

The lodge features 8 stone cottages (bandas) and 5 tented canvas rooms (including 2 honeymoon suites), plus a beautiful two-story villa on a hilltop ideal for families and small groups. The cottages are situated halfway up a small hill, nicely spaced from each other for utmost privacy, each with breathtaking views of distant mountains and encompassing forest. The tented rooms have open fronts offering stunning views, ensuite bathrooms with shower and toilet, double beds, mosquito nets, sitting areas, and terraces. The two honeymoon suites feature generous wood-carved beds, desks, relaxing armchairs, and characterful stand-alone baths that are 'open to the elements' with views over a dry riverbed popular for visiting elephants.

Views & Wildlife

All rooms offer spectacular views over lush green forest, Uluguru Mountains, and the Selous reserve. A waterhole near the lodge attracts local wildlife where animals frequently come to drink, with an observation hide/hideout for watching them. The suites provide views over a dry riverbed where elephants and other species visit. The location offers fantastic views of surrounding forests and mountains, with the long-serving camp team guaranteeing a special stay infused with personal touch.

Facilities & Dining

The lodge features a warm and welcoming "Landrover's Return" pub/bar, two restaurants & bars, campfire area, and a freshwater swimming pool (some sources mention covered pool) with loungers for relaxing. Guests can cool off in the cool swimming pool after a thrilling game drive, loosen up for a drink at the pub prior to dinner, or relax by the pool overlooking the forest.
