Lake Masek Tented Lodge

Lake Masek Tented Lodge

Lake Masek Tented Lodge is an eco-friendly luxury tented camp situated on the edge of Lake Masek in the Ndutu area of the southern Serengeti, Tanzania. Located between the enormous plains of Serengeti and the northeastern part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the camp offers panoramic views over the water and distant mountain peaks. This prime viewing spot is the main setting of the Great Migration (December to April) where mega herds congregate to calve, attracting large numbers of cheetah, leopard, lion, and hyena.

Rooms

The camp consists of 20 spacious tented suites built on raised wooden platforms with private verandas/terraces from which guests can observe wildlife visiting Lake Masek. Tents include 5 with king-size beds, 10 with twin beds, and 5 triples, plus family tents (two interconnected tents). Each tent is ample and elegantly decorated with comfortable beds, cozy seating, mosquito nets, and gauze mesh protection. The elegant decor incorporates local materials and traditional African designs, creating a harmonious blend of modern convenience and authentic safari ambiance.

Each tent features a full en-suite bathroom with twin basins, a free-standing bathtub, and a romantic outdoor shower with hot water. Guests can enjoy refreshing showers under the stars after safari days. The bathrooms have hot showers, and all tents have private verandas protected by gauze mesh to keep insects out while allowing cool breezes. The raised platforms and tranquil verandas make this a great stop for soaking up the African bush.

General facilities

The main camp features a comfortable thatched lodge with lounge area, library, Internet room, small gift shop, dining area, and a wonderful large wooden viewing deck overlooking Lake Masek. The main house includes restaurant and lounge offering spectacular views from Masek Lake, located on an elegant elevated wood platform with thatched roofing, encircled by majestic palm trees. The camp has Internet access and is solar-powered but does not have credit-card facilities.

The camp is ecologically sustainable without losing comfort – electricity is generated by solar panels, water is rainwater collected during rains, and all products used are biodegradable. The camp is set up in a different part of the area each year to ensure guests always have the best vantage point for the Great Migration from their own tent. This environmental approach maintains immersive wilderness experience without compromising luxury.

Activities

Activities include year-round game viewing of the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, rhino), access to the annual Wildebeest Migration (December to April), hot air balloon safaris over the savannah, and wildlife observation from tent terraces. The landscape consists mostly of short grass plains allowing easy game viewing. After the 'green' months, big cat sightings are rarer but there's good chance of spotting elephant, smaller cats, flamingos, and plenty of birdlife attracted by the lake.
