Olakira Migration Camp is a unique seasonal mobile tented camp in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park that is the only tented camp that moves between the north and south of the Serengeti twice a year to follow the Great Migration. The camp is the sister camp to Sayari and serves as the roving alternative to permanent camps, like Nomads. With this mobility comes the flexibility and reliability of being positioned exactly where the action is, getting close to the heart of Africa's most spectacular wildlife phenomenon.
Rooms
The camp consists of 9 luxury safari tents (10 tents in the north season), including two tents connected via a walkway to provide a family tent. Each tent features a signature 270° star-gazing mesh extension that allows guests to roll their bed out under a mosquito net canopy and experience sleeping under the African night sky. Tents are designed to blend into the bush without leaving a trace, yet don't scrimp on comforts with king-size beds (or twins), flushing toilets, and hot-water bucket showers. The en-suite tents are a masterclass in mobile luxury with solar-powered electricity.
About
From June to November, Olakira sits in the Northern Serengeti adjacent to a wide bend in the Mara River, moments away from the perilous river crossings where the dramatic, adrenaline-fueled crossings take place. From December to March, it moves south to Ndutu in the Southern Serengeti/Ngorongoro Conservation Area to witness the mass summer calving season where thousands of wildebeest give birth. The camp's site in the north is the envy of many others, and guests may even see a river crossing from the camp itself – a rare treat.
Dining
The main dining tent features views of the sprawling Serengeti plains where breakfasts and lunches are enjoyed. Dinner is a 3-course affair usually served around the campfire under the stars. Olakira is operated by Asilia Africa, among the finest safari operators in the country, with expert naturalist guides and friendly, accommodating staff. The intimate camp offers superb game viewing with opportunities for hot-air balloon safaris, open-vehicle game drives, and bush dining experiences.
During the northern season, game drives cover the Mara River confluence with spectacular game viewing and dramatic river crossings. During the southern season (December-March), game drives cover both the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and southern Serengeti, allowing frequent sightings of big cats, elephant, buffalo, and the more elusive African wild dog. The camp offers an authentic yet luxurious safari experience, immersing guests in predator-prey interactions during migration and calving season, with the horizon shifting with the seasons.
