Onsea House

Onsea House is a cosy, tranquil luxury boutique country inn and guesthouse situated on Namasi Hill just outside Arusha in northern Tanzania, approximately 10 minutes from town and 30 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The property is a classically neo-colonial stone and thatch build surrounded by beautifully landscaped, well-maintained gardens with lovely views, offering a pleasant relaxed atmosphere that serves as a great place to unwind before or after a safari on the northern circuit.

Rooms

The hotel offers intimate accommodation with only 5-9 rooms, including 2 double suites, 2 cottage rooms, and 1 family suite with a private garden and living room for those traveling with children. All rooms are light, airy, spacious, and designed in simple, understated style with gracious four-poster beds adding to the colonial African atmosphere, featuring Italian linens, wooden writing desks, and large beds. Each room has en-suite bathrooms with both bath and shower, air conditioning, seating areas, complimentary WiFi, and African décor with thoughtful inclusions like fresh flowers, bathrobes, and minibar. The cottages are self-contained, and some rooms overlook the Meru Valley.

Restaurant

Onsea House is renowned for its fine dining and exceptional cuisine, with meals accompanied by the finest wines, benefiting from the skills of a Michelin-experienced chef (Axel Janssens). The in-house restaurant is popular, with meals generally served on the expansive veranda/terrace overlooking the gardens and sunset over the Meru Valley. Shared guest areas include a breakfast room, sitting area, private entertainment lounge and bar, terrace, and spa sala. The property offers a true luxury guesthouse experience with high standards of food and comfort, more personalized service than a hotel and more privacy than a lodge resort.

The outdoor 'Hippo Pool' Jacuzzi under the African makuti roof offers stunning views overlooking Arusha, the Monduli Mountains, and Mount Meru. The altitude averages 1,400 meters above sea level, ideal for acclimatizing before climbing Mount Meru or Kilimanjaro. Guests can socialize in the lounge and cocktail bar, lounge in the gardens, or enjoy a refreshing swim.

The property feels more like a European-style restaurant-inn with intimate and personal hospitality, very tiny and personal with the main house featuring two guest rooms, dining and lounge area, plus a separate cottage with two additional guest rooms and private swimming pool. The main house lounge has polished tiled flooring, thick white walls, large slumber seating, and relies for color on fresh cut flowers, wooden carvings, and floral prints. Small paned windows, painted wrought iron frames, and makuti lean-tos typical of 1970s East African builds predominate, creating an authentic, lush, and calm atmosphere.
