Mbuzi Mawe Serena Camp

Mbuzi Mawe Serena Camp

Mbuzi Mawe Serena Camp is a luxury tented camp scenically located in a glade known as "the place of the klipspringer" (Mbuzi Mawe in Kiswahili), guarded by three million year-old granite towers in the heart of Serengeti National Park. The camp is nestled in an amphitheater of monolithic rock sculptures known as kopjes in a secluded acacia glade with sweeping views over the alternately lush and burning plains. Located in the famous Western Corridor of the Serengeti, it sits at the epicenter of one of the world's most famous national parks.

Rooms

The camp consists of 16 uniquely appointed luxury guest tents that are widely spaced throughout the rocky glades, reached by winding stone paths. Each tent stands on a stone platform with its own thatched roof and features 24-hour electricity, constant hot water, ensuite bathroom with twin basins, shower, and flushed WC. The spacious bedroom includes two queen-sized four-poster beds (accommodating up to 4 people), all-encompassing mosquito nets, seating area with stylish lamps and easy chairs, ceiling fan, safe, and private terrace with safari chairs and sun loungers.

Facilities

The central facilities include a tented dining room with panoramic terrace looking out over the plains, a stylish bar with a discerning selection of beers, wines, and spirits, and a boutique showcasing gifts, safari accessories, books, and cultural crafts. The bar and boutique are fashioned from rope-lashed hardwoods and back-lit by whimsical coconut shades. A rock-hewn stairway leads to a classically styled dining tent with soul-stirring views over the sun-blazed plains. The camp also features a circular barbecue and central fire-pit for evening sundowners and pre-dinner chat.

About

The camp enjoys a ringside seat for the Great Migration, cleverly located on one of the main annual migration corridors for over one million wildebeest, half a million zebras and gazelles, and their accompanying cast of predators. The area benefits from being away from crowds, ensuring a more secluded experience. With its geographically central location, the migration is accessible throughout much of the year. The camp is within easy reach of prime wildlife theatres including Lobo, Western Corridor, Grumeti River, southern grass plains, Seronera Valley, and kopjes of Barafu, Gol, Maasai, Loliondo, Simba, and Moru.

Activities

Activities include daily game drives, ranger-led bush walks, bird-watching, and sightings of Serengeti residents including elephant, lion, cheetah, leopard, buffalo, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, warthog, hippo, crocodile, and a bewildering array of antelopes. The Serengeti offers one of the most spellbinding ornithological experiences in the world. Hot air balloon safaris can be arranged, and the camp offers evocative al fresco breakfasts, safari luncheons, lantern-lit bush suppers, campfire roasts, and cultural dancing displays by the Ikoma people, the original guardians of the Serengeti plains.

The camp is named after the tiny Klipspringer antelopes that still prance atop the rocky battlements at dawn, and the glade was once the hunting ground of lions that lounged in the shelter of tumbled boulders. When night falls, the camp still echoes to the menace of their far-distant calls. The camp offers express check-in/check-out with cold towel and welcome drink, laundry and valet services, gift shop, business centre, free WiFi, massage services, and honeymoon/wedding planning. It's adjacent to both Seronera and Lobo airstrips with meet-and-greet and transfer service.
